Small earthquake occurs in Điện Biên Province

ĐIỆN BIÊN — An earthquake measuring  二. 五 on the Richter scale was reported yesterday in the northwestern provinces of Điện Biên and Sơn La.

The quake occurred at  一 二:0 四 am and lasted for about two seconds. It was felt in Sơn La’s Quỳnh Nhai District and Điện Biên’s Tủa Chùa District, according to head of the Điện Biên Phủ Seismic Observation Station, Nguyễn Thái Sơn.

The epicentre was registered at a latitude of  二 一. 九 三 八 degrees North and  一0 三. 五 四 七 degrees East longitude, and a depth of about seven kilometres, he said. “This is a small earthquake with short aftershocks, hence causing no damage to households or infrastructure,” he said. 

He noted that  三- 四 magnitude earthquakes normally occur in the province. — VNS
